Deze soort komt wijdverspreid voor in Zuid-Amerika en telt 9 ondersoorten: Streptoprocne zonaris mexicana: zuidelijk Mexico en Belize. Streptoprocne zonaris bouchellii: van Nicaragua tot Panama. Streptoprocne zonaris pallidifrons: Grote- en Kleine Antillen. Streptoprocne zonaris minor: noordelijk Venezuela en Trinidad. Streptoprocne zonaris albicincta: zuidelijk Venezuela en de Guiana's. Streptoprocne zonaris subtropicalis: Colombia, westelijk Venezuela en Peru. Streptoprocne zonaris altissima: hogere delen van Colombia en Ecuador. Streptoprocne zonaris kuenzeli: Bolivia en noordwestelijk Argentinië. Streptoprocne zonaris zonaris: oostelijk Bolivia, Paraguay, zuidelijk Brazilië en noordelijk Argentinië.
