Feeding Habits
Japanese Sparrowhawk's diet mainly consists of small birds, particularly Eurasian Tree Sparrows, occasionally preying on medium-sized birds and small mammals like rodents. Japanese Sparrowhawk hunts by day and, uniquely, also at night by artificial light, capturing prey with techniques comparable to related species. Japanese Sparrowhawk supplements its diet with reptiles and insects, particularly in its Japanese range.
Habitat
Japanese Sparrowhawk typically inhabits a variety of forested environments, including coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forests, as well as riparian woodlands. It is also found in evergreen subtropical forests. Its habitat extends to inhabited areas and woodlots within residential and agricultural regions. Japanese Sparrowhawk adapts to hunting in clearings and during migration and winter, it frequents secondary growth, plantations, and open countrysides interspersed with forest patches, scrublands, marshlands, and agricultural areas.
