Description
The millerbird is a critically endangered species of bird only found in Hawaii - specifically in the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Mating pairs form long-term bonds and defend a large territory. The millerbird had two subspecies, Acrocephalus familiaris kingi and Acrocephalus familiaris familiaris, though the latter has unfortunately gone extinct.

Feeding Habits
Millerbird primarily consumes insects, including larvae, moths, caterpillars, flies, grasshoppers, small beetles, and leafhoppers, exhibiting specialized foraging techniques that are adapted to its habitat.
Habitat
The millerbird typically inhabits low open grasslands and wetland vegetations within the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Their environment includes steep, rocky terrains with scrubby vegetation, bordered by steep cliffs, and varying elevations up to 277 meters. The habitat features a mild average temperature of 24°C and annual rainfall ranging between 660 to 1,372 mm. Freshwater seeps, both permanent and intermittent, are present, adding to the habitat's diversity. Vegetation primarily comprises shrubs such as ‘āweoweo and ‘ilima, as well as bunchgrasses like kāwelu, with the millerbird showing a preference for dense cover near the ground. Despite drastic alterations to the original habitat by human actions and introduced species like rabbits, which led to the extinction of various endemic species and significant vegetation changes, the habitat has since recovered, although species compositions differ from the past.
