Description
The magnificent sunbird (Aethopyga magnifica) is a species of bird in the sunbird family which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Flight is fast and direct on their short wings. Most species can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perch to feed most of the time. It is endemic to the western Philippines and was once considered a subspecies of the crimson sunbird.
Feeding Habits
Magnificent Sunbird feeds on insects, spiders, and nectar, sometimes piercing bases of flower corollas. It forages solo or in pairs, from lower levels to the canopy, occasionally in family groups.
Habitat
The magnificent Sunbird typically resides in secondary growth forests, scrublands, and areas along the forest edge. It is also known to inhabit cultivated lands and occasionally ventures into garden spaces. Its preference for these environments is characterized by a blend of natural and modified landscapes, providing a mixture of dense vegetation and open areas for foraging.
