Description

The five-striped sparrow (Amphispiza quinquestriata) is a medium-sized sparrow. This passerine bird is primarily found along the eastern Gulf of California region and Pacific region of mainland western Mexico, with a breeding range that extends into the southern tip of the U.S. state of Arizona, the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range containing the Madrean sky islands, of southeastern Arizona, extreme southwestern New Mexico, and northern Sonora. This species is a regular victim of cowbird nest parasites.

Feeding Habits
Five-striped Sparrow, primarily consumes insects and seeds, employing foraging techniques adapted to its environment. It exhibits unique dietary preferences that distinguish it from similar species.

Nest Behavior
Nesting primarily occurs in mid to late summer, corresponding with the summer rains. Five-striped Sparrow's females construct the nests while males sing to defend their territory. The calm post-rainy environment promotes egg-laying and parental care.
Nest Characteristics
Five-striped Sparrow builds a deep open cup-shaped nest, typically located in dense grass clumps, lower shrubbery, or at the base of ocotillos, ranging from a few inches to 5 feet off the ground. It is constructed of grass and lined with finer grass and animal hair.
