Feeding Habits
Red-fronted Macaw consumes a diverse diet including legumes, cacti, and fruits from trees like Schinus and Erythrina, as well as maize and groundnuts. Red-fronted Macaw forages for these items, adapting to seasonal availability.
Habitat
Red-fronted Macaw typically reside in arid montane scrub and deciduous woodlands, including cactus-dominated ecosystems within intermontane valleys and gorges. These habitats range in elevation from 1100 to 2700 meters, occasionally extending to 3000 meters. The vegetation is characterized by thorny trees and a variety of cacti, adapting red-fronted Macaw to survive in semi-arid climates with drastic temperature differences between day and night. Unlike their rainforest cousins, red-fronted Macaw are unique in nesting within cliff fissures due to the scarcity of large trees in their range.
