Description
The grey Heron is a very common species to come across in marine, brackish, and freshwater ecosystems; these habitats must have at least four months of warm weather or else these birds will migrate for new breeding grounds. The grey Heron hunts by wading through shallow waters looking for fish and various invertebrates; their natural diet helps control some aquatic species populations.

Life Expectancy

Feeding Habits
Grey Heron predominantly feeds in shallow waters, preying on fish, amphibians, insects, and small mammals with its long bill. It displays opportunistic behavior by occasionally preying on juvenile birds, including ducklings and birds as large as water rails.
Habitat
Grey Heron primarily inhabits wetland environments with accessible waters such as shallow ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes, and coastal regions like estuaries and tidal mudflats. These wet areas can range from fresh to brackish or saltwater systems, and ideally remain unfrozen for the majority of the year. Grey Heron adapts to various elevations from sea level up to alpine regions, reaching heights of 2000 meters and occasionally higher. Tree presence is generally preferred, although grey Heron can also occupy open areas like grasslands, rice fields, and man-made waterscapes such as fishponds and sewage farms. Seasonal habitat changes occur in some regions, indicating flexible habitat preferences.
