Description

The cordilleran canastero (Asthenes modesta) is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. Its natural habitats are temperate grassland and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. Seven subspecies are recognized: A. m. proxima (Chapman, 1921) - Peru A. m. modesta (Eyton, 1852) - Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru A. m. hilereti (Oustalet, 1904) - Tucumán and Catamarca, Argentina A. m. rostrata (von Berlepsch, 1901) - Bolivia A. m. serrana Nores, 1986 - Argentina A. m. cordobae Nores & Yzurieta, 1980 - Argentina. Includes former subspecies A. m. navasi (Remsen, 2003) A. m. australis Hellmayr, 1925 - Chile and Argentina

Feeding Habits
Cordilleran Canastero's diet mainly consists of arthropods like beetles, ants, and cockroaches. These birds forage alone or in pairs, gleaning food from the ground or, less commonly, from low vegetation.
Habitat
Cordilleran Canastero typically inhabits arid to semi-humid grassland regions characterized by Puna and southern temperate grasslands. These areas are often rocky with scattered low bushes. Cordilleran Canastero is also found in environments with arid montane scrub, arid Polylepis thickets, Baccharis tola scrub, and dry open woodlands, preferring landscapes with a blend of open spaces and shrubby vegetation.
