Description

The sharp-billed canastero or lesser canastero (Asthenes pyrrholeuca) is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae, the ovenbirds. The sharp-billed canastero is a resident breeding species in central and southern Argentina and the eastern border Andean cordillera of Chile; some birds migrate north as far as the southwest border of Paraguay, the southern border region of Bolivia, and western Uruguay, in the austral winter. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, and temperate grassland. Two subspecies are recognized: A. p. pyrrholeuca (Vieillot, 1817) - Argentina A. p. sordida (Lesson, 1839) - Chile and Argentina

Feeding Habits
Sharp-billed Canastero predominantly consumes insects like hemipterans and beetles. Often foraging alone or in pairs, sometimes joining mixed flocks, sharp-billed Canastero gleans prey from low vegetation, showcasing a less terrestrial foraging style compared to its relatives.
Habitat
The sharp-billed Canastero typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments characterized by montane and lowland scrub, as well as southern temperate grasslands. It is found in regions with dense scrub, shrub-steppe ecosystems, and hilly, rocky grasslands. The species can also adapt to sandy dune areas that feature scattered low bushes. Additionally, sharp-billed Canastero may be present in tall grasslands, marshy zones with vegetation like Polygonum lapthifolium, and in Chaco scrub habitats.
