Description
The hyacinth visorbearer (Augastes scutatus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is endemic to Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss.
Size
10 cm
Feeding Habits
Hyacinth Visorbearer primarily feeds on nectar from a variety of plants, including bromeliads and cacti, also catching insects like beetles and hemipterans mid-air or via perch-gleaning. Males defend territories containing rich floral resources, while females forage more sparsely. Despite not being dominant in their habitat, hyacinth Visorbearer has adapted to coexist with other hummingbirds.
Habitat
The hyacinth Visorbearer typically resides in montane regions characterized by xerophytic vegetation and dense montane forests within ravines. These areas exhibit conditions conducive to the bird’s preference for foraging at modest heights above the ground. The hyacinth Visorbearer's broader habitat range encompasses regions with gallery forests and bushy areas, as well as rocky terrains with sparse vegetation.
