Description
The black-and-gold tanager (Bangsia melanochlamys) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is endemic to Colombia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Feeding Habits
Black-and-gold Tanager primarily consumes canopy fruits, particularly Ericaceae, Marcgraviaceae, Melastomataceae, and others, supplementing with arthropods. Exhibits deliberate searching behaviors, especially in epiphytes, and occasionally feeds fledglings fruit. Unique in extracting nectar by discarding Cavendishia petals. Stomach analysis shows a diet of 75-100% fruit.
Habitat
Black-and-gold Tanager primarily resides in mature humid tropical premontane and montane evergreen forests with high canopy cover and dense undergrowth. These forests are typically situated on steep slopes, fostering a rich biodiversity that supports the species. Black-and-gold Tanager can also be found in medium-sized forest patches, disturbed habitats near primary forests, and secondary growth areas, including forest edges and clearings with isolated trees.
