Description
The chinspot batis is a rather stout bird 12–13 cm (4.7–5.1 in) in length. It has a black mask on its face, with a short white eyestripe, a grey cap and a white throat. The upperparts are grey with a prominent white wingstripe. The eyes are yellow while the legs and bill are black. The underparts are white with a black breast band in the males, the female has a chestnut breast band and a chestnut spot on the throat. Young birds are similar to females but the breast band and spot on the throat are tawny.

Feeding Habits
Chinspot Batis primarily consumes a varied diet of arthropods such as lepidopterans, beetles, flies, hymenopterans, orthopterans, termites, and spiders. It actively forages across tree strata, focusing on higher levels when competing with similar species, using dynamic movements to spot prey, which is captured by flying under the canopy or picked from under foliage, occasionally feeding on the ground. Its young are mainly fed larvae.
Habitat
The chinspot Batis thrives in a variety of savanna woodlands, predominantly deciduous, such as miombo woodlands, and is also seen in bushveld and scrub. These habitats extend to riverine thickets and at times, into human-modified landscapes including orchards, farmlands, and gardens. Interestingly, in central African mountains, it can be found at altitudes up to 3,000 meters. While it often favors wooded savanna, the chinspot Batis is versatile, inhabiting montane forests and even high-altitude grasslands with sparse trees across broader regions of sub-Saharan Africa.
