Description
Blyth's frogmouth (Batrachostomus affinis) is a species of bird in the family Podargidae. It is found in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. It is sometimes considered conspecific with the Javan and Palawan frogmouth.
Feeding Habits
Blyth's Frogmouth's diet mainly consists of insects, including grasshoppers, katydids, caterpillars, and small beetles. A scorpion has also been found in the stomach contents. Specific foraging behaviors of blyth's Frogmouth remain largely undescribed.
Habitat
Blyth's Frogmouth is primarily found in the dense understorey and midstorey of lowland rainforests, favoring closed-canopy environments such as evergreen, semi-evergreen, and dipterocarp forests. This species adapts to both mature and secondary forests and is known to inhabit areas with alluvial soils. Beyond primary forests, blyth's Frogmouth occasionally occupies mixed deciduous forests, mangrove regions, limestone crags, and overgrown plantations adjacent to native forests. The bird selects habitats with abundant dense vegetation, offering concealment and foraging opportunities. Despite having a preference for lowland areas, blyth's Frogmouth does not exclusively restrict itself to these zones as part of its range.
