Feeding Habits
Brown-billed Scythebill primarily feeds on arthropods, including beetles, earwigs, ants, insect eggs, larvae, and spiders. Utilizing its curved beak, brown-billed Scythebill forages by probing into crevices in bark to extract hidden prey, showcasing a specialized feeding behavior.
Habitat
Brown-billed Scythebill thrives in humid evergreen forests, particularly within hilly terrain and occasionally in lowland regions. This species exhibits a preference for the interior and edges of wet, epiphyte-rich cloud forests at middle elevations. Typically found in the upper tropical and subtropical zones, it ranges from 600 to 1700 meters in elevation in South Central America, and more commonly resides between 1250 to 2000 meters, extending up to 2200 meters and even 2500 meters in some cases, in the Northern and Central Andes. Although rare and local in tropical lowlands, brown-billed Scythebill can descend to 200 meters and even to sea-level in specific Pacific coastal areas.
