Size
17 cm
Feeding Habits
Dark-rumped Rosefinch primarily consumes small seeds, particularly from grasses and wild roses, alongside some fruits like fallen crab apples, even sipping nectar from rhododendron flowers. It forages on the ground, usually near cover, and is a shy species, diving into cover if disturbed. Dark-rumped Rosefinch can be found alone or in small groups, and in larger flocks during non-breeding season.
Habitat
The habitat of dark-rumped Rosefinch encompasses the undergrowth of montane and submontane forests, characterized by a mix of juniper, dwarf rhododendron, silver fir, and birch. These birds also dwell in dense bamboo clumps, barberry and thorn-scrub, as well as rose thickets within river valleys. Habitually, they can be found on open hillsides and alpine meadows. During the non-breeding season, dark-rumped Rosefinch occupies similar or more open forests with an affinity for rhododendron and birch, alongside scrubby hillsides accented with bamboo and, occasionally, dense hemlock forests.
