Feeding Habits
Sunda Coucal is an omnivorous bird with a diet comprising 40% amphibians and reptiles, 34% insects, and 2% small mammals. It consumes a variety of prey including grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, moths, dragonflies, cicadas, frogs, snails, geckos, snakes, and rats, occasionally feeding on green rice plant seeds.
Habitat
Sunda Coucal generally inhabits mangroves, estuary swamps, thickets, and coastal lowland areas with Imperata grass. They frequent Nypa palm vegetation behind mangroves and occasionally inland grass swamps. The bird is associated with fringing habitats, often due to competition from Centropus sinensis in denser mangrove areas. Seasonally, sunda Coucal can be found in grassy fields, flooded forest edges, and sugarcane plantations during wet periods, and prefers tall grass meadows and dry marshlands in the dry season.
