Description
The Cephalopterus ornatus is a large passerine bird. It is also called amazonian Umbrellabird as it is native to the Amazon, and can be found in other parts of South America. The appearance of the bird is similar to woodpeckers, and it mostly flies over open areas in forests.
Size
41 - 51 cm
Feeding Habits
Amazonian Umbrellabird's diet consists mainly of fruits, large insects, and occasionally lizards. Preferring fruits from palms, Byrsonima, and Cecropia, amazonian Umbrellabird captures animal prey mid-flight and beats it against a perch prior to swallowing.
Habitat
The amazonian Umbrellabird is typically found in two primary habitats within the broader Amazon Basin and the Orinoco region. This bird favors the dense vegetation of forests situated along riverbanks and on river islands, as well as the adjacent seasonally flooded várzea forests. It thrives in areas rich in humidity and is also found in the foothills of the Andes, where humid forest environments provide it with necessary shelter and resources.
Dite type
Frugivorous
General Info
Distribution Area
This species occurs in two main populations: One found in woodland and forest, mainly near rivers, in the Amazon basin, and a second found in forested foothills of the eastern Andes. The Amazonian umbrellabird is found variously in small groups, pairs or individually. They are usually seen in or near the canopy but due to their wary behavior and scarcity at open spots they are easily missed for a bird of this size. They are heard in the field more often than they are seen. Fruit and berries are usually preferred but insects, spiders and insect larvae are eaten opportunistically.
