Description
The rufous-capped thornbill (Chalcostigma ruficeps) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forest and heavily degraded former forest.
Size
10 cm
Feeding Habits
Rufous-capped Thornbill primarily feeds on nectar, particularly from Melastomataceae flowers, Vallea stipularis, and Fuchsia canescens. It employs unique methods like piercing flower bases or using slits made by other birds. Foraging is typically done by clinging to plants rather than hover-flight. Rufous-capped Thornbill also consumes insects and males defend feeding territories.
Habitat
The rufous-capped Thornbill inhabits a variety of humid environments, predominantly found in moist second-growth areas, riparian zones with dense vegetation, and edges of montane forests. These birds are also accustomed to the wet, mossy conditions of cloud forests, where they typically forage in the lower to middle strata of the vegetation.
