Feeding Habits
Little Ringed Plover predominantly feeds on a varied diet of insects, insect larvae, spiders, ants, and larger prey like grasshoppers and beetles. This bird forages by sight, picking off invertebrates from the ground, and exhibits a preference for aquatic environments where it can also consume worms, crustaceans, and snails.
Habitat
The little Ringed Plover is commonly found in open gravel areas near freshwater sources in the Palearctic region, including river edges and gravel pits, mainly within lowland areas up to an elevation of 2750 m in the Himalayas. This species prefers habitats that are either bare or sparsely vegetated, avoiding rough terrain and dense vegetation. They are well-adapted to habitats that are often temporary or artificial such as industrial sites, yet they maintain a preference for proximity to standing or slow-flowing water, which can range from fresh to brackish. The little Ringed Plover is migratory, breeding in these habitats and wintering in Africa. It forages for insects and worms in muddy areas, usually by sight.
