Description

The rufous-chested plover (Charadrius modestus) or rufous-chested dotterel, is a monotypic species of bird measuring 19-22 centimeters in length and weighing between 71 and 94 grams It is part of the family Charadriidae. It breeds in southern parts of Argentina and Chile and on the Falkland Islands. Some birds migrate north in winter, reaching as far as Uruguay, southern Brazil and occasionally Peru. Its natural habitats are temperate grassland and sandy shores.

Feeding Habits
Rufous-chested Plover feeds on insects, larvae, crustaceans, mollusks, and some plants, like algae. Rufous-chested Plover forages at water's edge and defends territories up to 100m. Outside breeding season, rufous-chested Plover forages in groups, sometimes with C. falklandicus.
Habitat
The rufous-chested Plover typically inhabits inland short grasslands and can be found in boggy lowlands or stony areas near upland lakes. This species adapts to a variety of environments, including coastal shingle, bogs, and heaths. During the non-breeding season, the rufous-chested Plover moves to areas like flooded grasslands, eroded inland terrains, marshes, streams, mudflats, beaches, and rocky coastlines.
