Description

The coal-crested finch (Charitospiza eucosma) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. Though previously classified in the bunting and American sparrow family Emberizidae, molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that it is a member of the large tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Charitospiza. It is found mainly in the Cerrado, with small amounts in Bolivia and northern Argentina. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. It is threatened by habitat loss. It feeds on seed of plants specifically found in these habitats.

Habitat
Coal-crested Finch is primarily found in the Cerrado biome, inhabiting savanna ecosystems and savanna-grasslands transition areas. It is adapted to various strata within these habitats, from tall trees to the ground layer, where they actively forage. Additionally, coal-crested Finch can occupy semi-open arid vegetation and disturbed habitats, including rural savanna fragments. The species may show a preference for regions with exposed ground and is known to coexist with similar species in savanna areas. While regarded by some as a 'fire specialist,' empirical studies to confirm this categorization are lacking.

Granivorous
