Description
Description
This species looks very similar to the Hawaiʻi ʻelepaio, but the white underside extends to the flanks and further up the breast, and the upperside - especially the head - is more rust-colored.
Size
13 - 23 cm
Life Expectancy
18-22 years
Feeding Habits
Oahu Elepaio primarily consumes arthropods, including a variety of insects and spiders, foraging actively among tree branches and leaves. Its specialized dietary adaptation involves agile movements for effective hunting in its forest habitat.
Habitat
The oahu Elepaio predominantly inhabits mesic mixed-species forests characterized by heighted canopies and dense understories. They favor riparian zones in valleys but are less prevalent on elevated slopes and ridges. These birds show an adaptive preference for forests with non-native plants and are scarce in wet forests on windswept ridges and dry scrubby forests. The fact that the majority of their populations are in environments heavily altered by non-native vegetation highlights their adaptability, often found among introduced trees like the Kukui and various Guava species.
