Description
This is the most distinct ʻelepaio; adult birds have their head and back gray, with a white supercilium, a rusty-red breast and a white underside. Young birds are uniformly rusty above and white below. Wings and tail are alike in all subspecies, but the young individuals of sclateri have the white stippling of the wings replaced by rusty coloration too.

Life Expectancy
13 years
Feeding Habits
Kauai Elepaio consumes a diverse diet predominantly consisting of arthropods, including insects like beetles, flies, moths, caterpillars, and spiders. Its foraging behavior involves actively searching various substrates and plants. Kauai Elepaio exhibits unique dietary preferences for specific arthropods.
Habitat
Kauai Elepaio typically inhabits dense wet forests, particularly thriving in 'Ohi‘a forests at higher altitudes such as those found on the Alaka‘i Plateau. This bird is distinguished by its ability to adapt to forests dominated by introduced non-native plant species, enabling it to be more prevalent at lower elevations compared to other Hawaiian passerines. Although less common in drier forests and boggy areas with stunted ‘Ohi‘a, kauai Elepaio can still be encountered across a variety of forest types with a diverse array of non-native flora on broader geographical regions.
