Description
The red-billed emerald (Chlorostilbon gibsoni) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. Formerly it was considered as part of the species C. mellisugus, blue-tailed emerald. As considered here, it does not include C. melanorhynchus, (western emerald), of west Colombia and Ecuador, which is sometimes considered conspecific. It is found in Colombia and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, and heavily degraded former forest.
Feeding Habits
Red-billed Emerald primarily feeds on nectar from small, insect-pollinated flowers that offer low nectar rewards. These food sources are often overlooked by other hummingbirds. Red-billed Emerald typically feeds from a perched position, ranging from low above the ground to mid-level heights, and exhibits trap-lining behavior when foraging.
Habitat
The red-billed Emerald is typically found in dry and arid habitats such as desert scrub and drier woodlands. Additionally, it inhabits human-modified landscapes including cultivated areas, and suburban environments like parks and gardens. It favors conditions prevalent in broader tropical and subtropical regions.
