The brown dipper (Cinclus pallasii), also known as Pallas's dipper, Asian dipper or the Asiatic dipper, is an aquatic songbird found in the mountains of the east Palearctic. It is a thrush-like bird with a cocked tail. Its plumage is chocolate-brown with a slightly lighter coloured back and breast. At 22 cm (8.7 in) and 87 g (3.1 oz), it is the largest of the dippers. This species, which is not often seen, is found at medium to low elevations where mountain streams flow.

Feeding Habits
Brown Dipper forages by diving for benthic organisms or wading to pick food off stream bottoms. During December-April, its diet consists mostly of larger prey to support its energy needs for breeding. Fledglings also dive for food, and one population feeds underwater in extreme cold. Post-typhoon, brown Dipper may utilize lower-quality streams as refuges.
Habitat
The habitat of brown Dipper consists primarily of fast-flowing mountain streams and shallow rivers marked by clear waters. The species is typically associated with rocky environments and can also be found at upland tarns. Geographically, brown Dipper occupies a range that includes broad mountainous regions. The bird tends to occupy larger, slower rivers as well, especially in the Himalayan area, where its habitat may overlap with closely related species. Throughout its range, brown Dipper is adapted to thrive in aquatic habitats that provide the necessary resources for feeding and breeding.
