Description

The rufous-throated dipper or Argentine dipper (Cinclus schulzii) is an aquatic songbird found in South America, and is part of the dipper family. It lives along rapid rocky streams of the Southern Andean Yungas, in far southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina at 800 metres to 2500 metres in elevation. The bird breeds in the alder zone at 1500 metres to 2500 metres in elevation.[1] BirdLife International have classified this species as "Vulnerable". Threats included reservoir construction, hydroelectric dams, and irrigation schemes. The current population is estimated at 3,000 to 4,000.

Feeding Habits
Rufous-throated Dipper's diet consists mainly of aquatic insects and beetle imagos. It forages by wading or standing on wet surfaces, picking off invertebrates and occasionally capturing aerial insects. Rufous-throated Dipper has a unique feeding behavior, often submerging its head while using wing flaps for balance, but doesn't dive underwater. More active during overcast or rainy conditions.
Habitat
Rufous-throated Dipper is typically found along fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers characterized by rocky terrains with cascades and waterfalls. These streams are often flanked by cliffs or banks. The species' breeding habitats are closely associated with the Andean alder woodland zones, and it is also found in pastureland streams on occasion. During colder conditions, rufous-throated Dipper may venture to lower altitudes and inhabit larger river systems. It is rarely seen in the narrow forest streams preferred by other species such as the Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper.
