Description
The grey-crowned woodpecker (Colaptes auricularis) is a bird species in the woodpecker family (Picidae). It was formerly placed in the genus Piculus (Benz et al., 2006). The scientific name auricularis means "eared", an appearance created by the confluent, fine patterning of the species' head. It is endemic to the Pacific slope of Mexico. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
