Description
The rufous-throated honeyeater (Conopophila rufogularis) is a species of bird in the family Meliphagidae. It is endemic to northern Australia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.
Size
14 cm
Feeding Habits
Rufous-throated Honeyeater consumes a varied diet including insects, spiders, nectar from flowering trees like Eucalyptus, and Ficus fruits. Rufous-throated Honeyeater forages in vegetation at all levels and uniquely on the ground. It employs numerous feeding techniques such as sally-striking and sally-hovering. Active in small groups, rufous-throated Honeyeater may join mixed-species flocks when feeding.
Habitat
The rufous-throated Honeyeater predominantly resides in open, grassy savanna woodlands, often characterized by a dominance of Eucalyptus. The understorey frequently consists of shrubs and a ground layer of grasses like spear-grass and spinifex. They are also found in riparian zones with paperbark or Eucalyptus-Melaleuca woodlands with dense shrubby undergrowth. Additionally, rufous-throated Honeyeater may inhabit Acacia thickets, rainforest patches, and occasionally mangroves, favoring areas with abundant riparian vegetation in semi-arid regions.
