Description
The black-masked finch (Coryphaspiza melanotis) is a species of South American bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Coryphaspiza. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland, and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Black-masked Finch primarily forages on the ground under tall grasses or in open areas at grassland edges. Its diet specifics are undocumented; however, it feeds alone or in pairs, potentially forming larger flocks after breeding.
Habitat
The black-masked Finch typically resides in areas with tall-grass habitats that include sparse low shrubs. They favor open grasslands and are seldom found in regions where the density of shrubs is high. Characteristically, black-masked Finch inhabitat the peripheries of seasonally inundated grasslands and are also found in territories with lofty tussock grasses interspersed with scrubby vegetation. Their selected environments also feature campos with native tussocky grasses peppered with patches of bare earth, interspersed bushes, and occasional yata'i palm clusters.
