Behavior
Yellow Rail are elusive and their behaviors are not widely observed. They engage in nocturnal singing to establish and defend territories, and males display unique posturing with raised wings to attract females or deter rivals. Courtship may involve males feeding and preening females. Both sexes participate in constructing nests, incubating eggs, and rearing young. These birds can be territorial even in wintering areas, some maintaining winter territories in Texas spanning up to 4.2 acres. Yellow Rail's daily life is surreptitious, largely revolving around their habitat's wet meadows and marshes, where they forage for food and interact with their environment and each other discreetly.
