Habitat
Common Quail thrives in open terrestrial habitats that include a variety of grasslands, agricultural fields, and savannas, typically avoiding densely wooded areas and wetlands. Geographically, they are found across temperate and tropical regions, preferring areas with access to water, especially in hotter climates. Habitually associated with open habitats on level or mildly undulating terrain, they can be found at elevations ranging from lowlands up to 3600 meters in certain areas like Ladakh, and are known to breed at heights exceeding 3000 meters in places including Bhutan. In Africa, sightings have been recorded up to 3000 meters, with adaptations to various highland ecosystems. Common Quail favors grassy areas with dense herbage, usually less than one meter tall, and avoids bare soils. During migration, common Quail can adapt to almost any weedy environment, including coastal areas.
