Description
The streaky seedeater (Crithagra striolatus) is a species of finch in the family Fringillidae. It is found in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
Size
15 cm
Feeding Habits
Streaky Seedeater primarily consumes small seeds, berries, and insects including aphids, termites, and beetle larvae. It actively forages alone or in small groups, both on the ground and at mid-height in vegetation, often joining mixed-species flocks outside the breeding season.
Habitat
Streaky Seedeater typically inhabits a range of montane habitats, including woodland edges, clearings, and forest underbrush. Preferring open country settings and elevations usually between 1,300–4,300 meters, streaky Seedeater also thrives in secondary evergreen forests, heathlands, and alpine moorlands. Furthermore, these birds are found in human-impacted areas such as the edges of cultivation, gardens, and even urban environments like major cities, where they may utilize feeders and baths. Streaky Seedeater's adaptability to varied vegetation types, from juniper woodlands to bamboo thickets and bracken scrub, reflects its ecological versatility across broader regions of high-altitude East Africa.
