Feeding Habits
Scarlet-breasted Dacnis has an omnivorous diet, including insects, small fruits, and possibly nectar. Notable for consuming Müllerian bodies of Cecropia and attending Trichospermum flowers for flying insects, scarlet-breasted Dacnis forages from canopy to sub-canopy and participates in mixed-species flocks.
Habitat
The primary habitat of scarlet-breasted Dacnis is humid tropical lowland evergreen forest. This bird species also inhabits secondary forests but has a strong association with pristine forest environments. Scarlet-breasted Dacnis is commonly found in more open areas within these forests, such as along river borders, forest clearings due to tree falls, as well as at the edges and ridges of these ecosystems. Typically, scarlet-breasted Dacnis resides in the canopy, venturing occasionally to the sub-canopy or lower strata, especially at the forest edges.
