Behavior
Sooty Grouse captivate with their elaborate mating rituals during the breeding season. Males enact a dramatic display high above in the trees involving powerful wingbeats and a series of deep, resonant hoots. Females signal interest with a soft murmur, prompting the male to descend and perform an impressive ground dance, his plumage puffed and vibrant neck sacs exposed. This polygynous species enforces territorial boundaries with aggressive displays and even combat. Post-mating, the male retreats from further involvement, while the female dedicates herself to nest-making and chick-rearing. In winter, sooty Grouse can be found roosting in familial groups before moving to new trees.
