Description
The rufous-backed antvireo (Dysithamnus xanthopterus) is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae. It is endemic to Brazil. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
Size
12 cm
Feeding Habits
Rufous-backed Antvireo primarily consumes insects, such as flies, moth larvae, and beetles, and occasionally feeds on berries like mistletoe. They forage alone or in pairs within mid-canopy branches and vine tangles, using short hops and pauses to locate prey. They exhibit distinctive upward sallies to catch food from vegetation and often join mixed-species understorey flocks.
Habitat
The rufous-backed Antvireo is typically found in the mid-storey and subcanopy layers of montane evergreen forests. It favors environments that include mature trees as well as areas of older secondary growth. Such forests offer dense foliage and a complexity of vertical strata which serve as an ideal setting for the rufous-backed Antvireo's foraging and nesting activities.
