Description
It is a small heron, 43–55 cm long, with dark slaty wings, body, and crested head, with a white throat and neck. The appearance is similar to the white-necked heron. Males (247–280 g) are heavier than females (225–242 g), but the two are similar in appearance. Immature birds lack the crest as well as the dark colouring on the head and may look like small versions of the white-necked heron. The juveniles were once classified as a separate species.

Feeding Habits
Pied Heron's diet mainly comprises insects, supplemented by frogs, crabs, fish, and small aquatic life. Known for feeding both solitarily and in large flocks, pied Heron displays versatility in its foraging techniques.
Habitat
The pied Heron predominantly inhabits coastal regions with an affinity for various wetlands such as coastal grasslands, swamps of both salty and fresh water, mangroves, mudflats, and sandbanks. This species extends to diverse freshwater environments like watercourses, lakes, rice paddies, and sewage ponds, and has been observed frequenting livestock enclosures. It occasionally ventures to feed in burnt land areas and can adapt to foraging in dry terrains, although rarely straying far from water sources. While typically coastal, the pied Heron can be found at altitudes up to 2500 meters in certain highland areas.
