Description
The mottle-backed elaenia (Elaenia gigas) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae. It is found in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist shrubland and heavily degraded former forest.

Feeding Habits
Mottle-backed Elaenia primarily consumes insects and small fruits. It forages by making short sallies into the air and hover-gleaning from 3-20 meters up, often from exposed perches with a distinctive, almost permanent crest raise.
Habitat
Mottle-backed Elaenia is typically found in successional forest habitats within tropical to upper tropical zones. Its preferred environments include riparian growth areas, landslides, man-made clearings in former forest regions, as well as willow (Salix) and Tessaria scrub on river islands and forest edges.
