The grey bunting (Emberiza variabilis) is a species of bird in the family Emberizidae. It breeds in southern Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands and northern Japan, it migrates to southern Japan and the Nansei archipelago. Its natural habitats are boreal forests and temperate forests.

Feeding Habits
Grey Bunting predominantly eats small invertebrates, seeds, and berries. They forage on the ground, meticulously searching for food. Noted for their selective feeding, grey Bunting exhibits particular preference for certain seeds and berries when available.
Habitat
Grey Bunting generally inhabits mixed deciduous and coniferous forests at middle to subalpine elevations. The species thrives in areas with dense vegetation, including undergrowth and thickets, particularly those with dwarf bamboo, alders, willows, and birches. Typically found in mountainous and hilly regions ranging from approximately 1000 to 1800 meters in elevation. During winter, grey Bunting can also be found in evergreen forest undergrowth near streams and adapted to human-altered landscapes such as parks, suburban gardens, city centers, and open cultivations with isolated tree stands.
