Feeding Habits
Great Pampa-finch primarily feasts on seeds and arthropods, the latter being crucial during breeding. Forages on the ground and may follow army ants. Often feeds in pairs or family groups.
Habitat
Great Pampa-finch are typically found in open and semi-open landscapes, including subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland and temperate grasslands. It inhabits moist areas with a mix of grass and scattered shrubs - more prevalent at the edges of marshes and seasonally wet or flooded lowland grasslands. In the western and northern parts of its range, great Pampa-finch may prefer habitats with a heavier shrub component and less proximity to wetlands, although grass is still a significant element of its environment. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of 2500 meters, sometimes even adapting to cultivated lands. When sharing territory with closely related species, great Pampa-finch tends to favor more humid areas and lower elevations.
