The variegated flycatcher (Empidonomus varius) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae. With the crowned slaty flycatcher being moved to its own genus, this is now the only species remaining in Empidonomus. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and the Guianas; it is a vagrant to more northwestern parts of the continent. Accidental in North America north of Mexico, there have been only seven records, Maine (1977), Tennessee (1984), Ontario (1993,2020), Washington (2008), and 2 sightings in Florida (2013 and 10/26/2015). It is similar to the smaller piratic flycatcher and larger sulphur-bellied flycatcher.

Feeding Habits
Variegated Flycatcher primarily consumes insects and small fruits. It displays aerial foraging techniques, catching prey mid-flight. Notable for its agile hunting skills, variegated Flycatcher may show preference for specific insects or fruits when available.
Habitat
Variegated Flycatcher primarily occupies the peripheries of primary forests and dense secondary woodlands, often near water sources. Its habitat extends to open savannas with scattered vegetation and significant forest clearings. Typically found below 1200 meters, variegated Flycatcher is also present in urban green spaces and occasionally within high forest canopies, adapting up to 1900 meters elevation, and sometimes higher.
