Description
The grey-headed tanager (Eucometis penicillata) is a widely distributed species of small Neotropical bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Eucometis. It is found in Central America and northern South America from Mexico to Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical swamps, and heavily degraded former forest.
Size
17 cm
Life Expectancy
8.4-10 years
Feeding Habits
Grey-headed Tanager primarily feeds on insects like caterpillars, crickets, and beetles, alongside fruits. It hunts by gleaning arthropods off vegetation. Its diet uniquely includes a variety of prey such as flies, spiders, roaches, hymenoptera, moths, centipedes, and winged ants.
Habitat
Grey-headed Tanager typically inhabits undergrowth of tropical lowland evergreen forests, transitioning to areas such as forest edges, open woodlands, and swamp forests. These birds favor varied forest habitats, frequently occupying secondary growth, scrublands, and cultivated areas near forests. Geographical distinctions are observed with grey-headed Tanager east of the Andes preferring water-associated environments like swampy thickets, palm swamps, and mangroves. Conversely, west of the Andes, grey-headed Tanager demonstrates adaptability to both humid and arid conditions, broadening their habitation range across diverging ecosystems.
