The southern white-crowned shrike grows to a length of about 24 cm (9 in). The sexes are alike; in the adult bird the crown and forehead are white, and the mask is black and extends above and below the eye to the side of the neck. The nape and upper parts are ashy-brown and the wings and tail are dark brown. The underparts are off-white, the upper breast being tinged with buff. The lower belly and vent areas are ashy-brown. The beak is black, the eyes brown and the legs dark brown. Juveniles are similar to adult birds but the crown is slightly mottled and barred and grey rather than white. Feeding Habits
Southern White-crowned Shrike consumes a varied diet including insects like locusts, grasshoppers, caterpillars, bees, termites, and beetles, as well as millipedes and small fruits. Prey is mainly taken on the ground after being spotted from perches. Southern White-crowned Shrike forages alone, in pairs, or groups, often using aerial hawking and can hang upside-down to forage from trees.
Habitat
The southern White-crowned Shrike typically occupies open woodlands and parklands, favoring environments with tall deciduous trees, particularly thorny species, and sparse understory. These birds are commonly associated with regions near large rivers and are more prevalent in the semi-desert thorn savanna of drier areas. Additionally, they are often encountered in bushveld and lowland habitats, occasionally extending into human-modified landscapes such as village gardens.
