The masked water tyrant (Fluvicola nengeta) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers, one of three in the genus Fluvicola.

Habitat
The masked Water Tyrant inhabits a range of wetland-associated landscapes primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. Its preferred habitats encompass mangrove forests, moist shrublands, and areas undergoing regrowth after deforestation. Masked Water Tyrant shows a particular affinity for semi-open lowland environments close to fresh water, such as marshes and rice paddies. Additionally, it can be found along the banks of ponds, rivers, and streams. This species is typically observed at elevations below 300 meters, but some populations exist up to 800 meters and occasionally at 1300 meters.

It is found in its major range in eastern and southeastern Brazil in the caatinga and extreme eastern cerrado, and also Atlantic coastal regions; a second smaller disjunct range occurs on the Pacific side of South America in western Ecuador, and coastal border regions of northwest Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and heavily degraded former forest.
