Feeding Habits
Black-bellied Antwren primarily consumes insects, including orthopterans, lepidopteran larvae, and spiders. Black-bellied Antwren forages in dense undergrowth, exhibiting a zigzag pattern, short flights, frequent pauses, and horizontal lunges to glean prey from various surfaces and occasionally the ground. Unique behaviors include tail-fanning, side-to-side hitching, and bill wiping post-capture.
Habitat
Black-bellied Antwren typically inhabits the understorey and mid-storey regions of tropical deciduous forests, including areas with dense vine thickets known as mata-de-cipó. They are also found in regions of tall caatinga scrublands. These birds are often observed within ecotones where caatinga transitions into cerrado ecosystems and are known to frequent areas of degraded caatinga with taller second-growth scrub.
