Description

The red fody is about 5 inches (13 cm) in length and weighs 14–19 grams (0.49–0.67 oz). The male of the species is bright red with black markings around each eye. Its wings and tail are olive-brown. Its underparts are also red, which distinguishes it from other fodies in areas where it has been introduced. The female fody's upper parts are olive-brown and its underparts are greyish brown.

Feeding Habits
Red Fody's diet is diverse, including grass seeds, insects, fruit, nectar, and household scraps. They employ various foraging methods and may also feed on copra. Unique dietary preferences or adaptations enhance their foraging efficiency.
Habitat
The red Fody typically inhabits open country, which includes natural savannas, agricultural fields, and urban areas. This species avoids intact forests but may traverse them. It is adaptable and can be found at various elevations, typically below 2000 meters but reaching up to 2400 meters. Red Fody is considered a pest in rice farming regions due to its foraging habits. Its roosting sites vary from sugar cane fields and bamboo stands to tall grasses, reedbeds, and diverse mangrove and other tree species.

Distribution Area

It is a common bird found in forest clearings, grasslands and cultivated areas, but not in dense forest. In Madagascar it is regarded as a pest of rice cultivation. It has been introduced to other areas of the Indian Ocean, included the Amirantes, Comoros, Seychelles, Mauritius and Réunion.
