Feeding Habits
Andean Coot, a herbivore, forages primarily on aquatic vegetation and algae. It exhibits a unique 'foot-trembling' technique to dislodge plant food, feeding mainly during mornings and evenings, showing a preference for certain plants.
Habitat
The andean Coot typically inhabits freshwater environments such as swamps, lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes. These areas are generally characterized by large bodies of water with shallow peripheries, often surrounded by dense submerged vegetation and reed fringes. The andean Coot is found in both reed-laden and barren lakes, which may have Chara as the dominant plant. They exist in broader geographical regions at altitudes ranging from 2100 to 4700 meters, showing variation in habitats with elevation.
