Red-gartered Coot primarily consumes aquatic vegetation, adeptly diving in deeper waters or upending to feed. Occasionally scavenges weeds dislodged by other waterfowl. Red-gartered Coot also forages on land close to water bodies.
Habitat
The habitat of red-gartered Coot encompasses a range of aquatic environments such as lakes, large ponds, rivers, and marshes, as well as deep, clear roadside ditches. These birds favor clear waters and are often found feeding in the sheltered areas near larger bodies of water. They are known to share habitats with similar species and may breed in areas with floating vegetation like Myriophyllum on shallow lakes. While primarily lowland dwellers, red-gartered Coot also inhabits inland areas and may be observed forming substantial groups in protected marine bays during the winter season.
