Description
The Purus jacamar (Galbalcyrhynchus purusianus) or chestnut jacamar is a species of bird in the Galbulidae family. It is found in the Amazon Basin of western Brazil, northern Bolivia and eastern Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical and tropical swamps and heavily degraded former forest.

Feeding Habits
Purus Jacamar primarily consumes insects, notably wasps, bees, and termites. Purus Jacamar forages mid-canopy to upper levels, using a 'sallying' technique from perches to capture prey, which is then beaten before being eaten. Purus Jacamar is sometimes mistakenly thought to catch fish.
Habitat
The purus Jacamar typically inhabits the edges of lowland primary and secondary forests, both terra firme and várzea types, with a preference for areas close to water bodies such as rivers, including young river islands, oxbow lakes, and swamps. These environments are often characterized by a presence of Cecropia trees and palms. The purus Jacamar is also found in middle successional stages of forests with mixed canopies, including Ficus and Cedrela species, and transitional forests, but is rarely seen deep within the forest interior.
