Feeding Habits
Green-tailed Jacamar primarily consumes flying insects like Hymenoptera and also feeds on Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, and others. It forages by perching on branches and making around 40 sallies per hour, displaying swift head movements for active hunting.
Habitat
The green-tailed Jacamar typically resides in the outskirts of tropical forests, including humid terra firme and várzea regions. It is commonly found along the periphery of gallery forests, secondary forests, and in mangroves. This species also adapts well to human-altered landscapes such as bushy marshlands and coffee plantations. Green-tailed Jacamar prefers habitats featuring open woodlands, savannas, shrubby areas, and is often seen around streams, rivers, and lightly wooded ridges. They are lower to mid-level perchers in these environments, occupying a niche similar to certain related species but differentiated by its specific preference for riverine and hilly areas.
