Description
These birds have short legs, long pointed wings and long forked tails. They have short bills, which is an adaptation to aerial feeding. The back and head are brown, and the wings are brown with black flight feathers. The belly is white. The underwings are chestnut. Very good views are needed to distinguish this species from other pratincoles, such as the very similar collared pratincole, which also has a chestnut underwing, and black-winged pratincole which shares the black upperwing flight feathers and lack of a white trailing edge to the wing. These features are not always readily seen in the field, especially as the chestnut underwing appears black unless excellent views are obtained.

Feeding Habits
Oriental Pratincole primarily consume insects like grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, winged termites, and shore-flies, foraging both on the ground and in flight, with a preference for foraging in small flocks during dusk or dawn, exhibiting aerial feeding techniques unique to their species.
Habitat
Oriental Pratincole is typically found in open habitats such as steppes, grasslands, and dry floodplains across broader Asia, with a presence in Australia as well. They favor environments often near water, including tidal mudflats, muddy wetlands, and rice fields. These birds are also known to inhabit man-made landscapes like ploughed fields, fallow pastures, and airfields. Occasionally, they are seen on beaches and intertidal zones up to 1700 meters elevation in New Guinea.
